(B) OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS
-----------------------------------------------------------

* THE "CANCER INDUSTRY" EXPOSED - "Britain's big cancer
research charities are a multi-million pound industry. Each year a
trusting public donates hundreds of millions of pounds. But the
truth behind the 'cancer industry' is more complex, and makes
alarming reading. For while cancer rates continue to escalate, the
main charities remain determined to avoid looking at the real
causes of this modern day epidemic, focusing instead on
fashionable & expensive 'cures', often for quite rare strains of the
disease. Martin J. Walker explains why the cosiness that has
developed between the pharmaceutical industry and the cancer
establishment renders big cancer charities part of the problem, not
the solution." - Ecologist magazine, Oct 2000 (cover story). Full

* ADAM'S MINE VICTORY!!! "Then we got the call -- the
Adams Mine deal was off! We were ecstatic! Democracy had
prevailed. On the one side was the largest garbage company in the
world, the biggest municipal contract in Canada's history, and the
most powerful lobbying firms in the country; and on the other side
were alarmed citizens in the north and in Toronto, activists,
aboriginal people, and some very cool City Councillors (special
kudos go to Coun. Jack Layton). The movement for environmental
sanity had taken on the seeming impossible, and had won. People
power prevailed. After years of protest by thousands of organized
Northerners and Torontonians, after all the pressure we all put on
Council in recent months, after the phone bees and the leafletting
and the rallies and the phonecalls to the mayor's office, we had won.
The pro-Adams mine flacks had lost, and they looked like fools.
Congrats to all of you who helped with the effort." - Toronto
mayoral candidate Tooker Gomberg http://www.GombergForMayor.org

(C) FEDERAL ELECTION NEWS
-----------------------------------------------------------

* IS OUR GOVERNMENT CORRUPT??? "In Canada, we are
living in a wake of negligence resulting from many incidents of
government/corporate/military/financial collusion. This collusion
has been perpetrated through our society's condoning of corporate
"donations" to political parties. During the last federal election, the
Reform/Canadian Alliance, Liberal and Conservative Parties
received donations from the following industries & corporations:
banks & financial institutions, coal, oil, gas, forest, automobile,
chemical, mining, nuclear, arms producers, agribusiness,
pharmaceutical, and of course, in the case of Reform, the gun
lobby. The correlation between funding of political parties and the
formulation and implementation of the policy of those political
parties has been virtually ignored." - Joan Russow, Leader, Green
Party of Canada http://www.green.ca 416-929-2397

* "Without political action, change happens only when it does not
conflict with vested economic interests." - Joan Russow, Leader,
Green Party of Canada http://www.green.ca 1-888-6GREEN6

* CANADIANS READY TO VOTE GREEN
A Pollara study in late September found that 84% of Canadians
will consider the environment important when voting in this
election. But are the big parties going to give more than lip
service? Or are they too busy listening to the corporate status
quo?? It's time to support and vote for the Green Party -- and let
our voices be heard! Win or lose, we will foster real debate on
issues that matter to people AND the planet. Help grow a vibrant
green movement! Help us offer a Green candidate in every riding
-- and give every Canadian the opportunity to vote Green. Check
out our websites for policies on the environment AND other issues:
such as economic justice, equitable distribution of resources,
peace, health, human rights. http://www.green.ca 416-929-2397

(D) TORONTO MUNICIPAL ELECTION NEWS
-----------------------------------------------------------

* POLITICIANS AVOIDING PUBLIC DEBATE. "In a stunning
show of cowardice, at the last minute David Collenette, federal
minister of Transportation, and minister responsible for the GTA in
cabinet, dropped out of a forum scheduled tonight at the St.
Lawrence Centre. The event, billed as Election Fever, was to have
featured Mel Lastman as well, until he too indicated that he would
not attend. Additionally, Case Ootes pulled out of a scheduled
forum on Oct. 23. Politicians these days prefer carefully planned
photo ops and quick sound bites to actually facing the electorate
and discussing their views. That's what works for them. But why
have the media been so complicit, letting the candidates off the
hook from partaking in the most fundamental tenet of our
democratic system?" - Toronto mayoral candidate Tooker
Gomberg http://www.GombergForMayor.org [his opponent,
incumbent Mel Lastman, has no website]

* SUZUKI & KLEIN ENDORSE GOMBERG "Tooker Gomberg
is one of the few politicians I have met who has a deep
understanding of the environmental and social justice issues that
confront us today and he has built a platform based on resolving
them. It's time we made these issues the top priority in every
election at all levels of government." - David Suzuki. "It's time to
tell Mel that you don't want a to live in a city of shiny facades that
drives homeless people off the streets and exports its garbage." -
Naomi Klein, Globe and Mail Columnist. "Tooker Gomberg is a
visionary -- an activist who puts principle into practice!" - Elizabeth
May, Executive Director, Sierra Club of Canada. "I'm voting for
Tooker Gomberg for mayor because, right now, garbage is the
defining issue, and he's on the side of a clean future." - Michele
Landsberg, Toronto Star Columnist. http://www.GombergForMayor.org
