* BUY NOTHING DAY, Fri Nov 24. Once, we shopped to
buy what we needed, period. Now that we don't need much,
we shop for other reasons: to impress each other, to fill a
void, to kill time. A mere 20% of the earth's population uses
80% of its natural resources. Over-consumption is killing the
planet. International Buy Nothing Day is a simple idea with
deep implications. It forces us to think about the "shop-till-
you-drop" imperative and its effects on the rest of the world.
Enjoy a break from the shopping frenzy. On the busiest
shopping day of the year, let's send over-consumers a
reminder: they're living off the backs of future generations.

* SEATTLE TO QUEBEC: CALL TO ACTION & PARTY! Fri
Dec 1, 7pm, Toronto. Find out plans for protesting the FTAA,
share ideas, see great videos, party! What is the FTAA? On
April 20-22, 2001, heads of state from every country in the
western hemisphere (except Cuba) will meet in Quebec City
at the "Summit of the Americas" to finalize a hemispheric
free trade agreement known as the Free Trade Area of the
Americas (FTAA). Think NAFTA on steroids. The FTAA will
create the largest free trade market in the world, and further
the corporate agenda at the expense of workers,
communities, and the environment. People throughout the
Americas are gearing up to challenge & protest this latest
step in corporate globalization, and we need you! We say
that human rights, environmental health & economic justice
must take priority over profits. Governments must listen up &
get the message. The global movement against corporate
rule is growing. We see the protests in Quebec as a way to
build that movement. 7-9pm discussion; 9pm-1am videos,
DJ, party. With Philippe Duhamel (Operation Salami), Patty
Barerra (Common Frontiers). Video screenings: "This is
