[OPIRG-EVENTS] People's Health Assembly

South Asia Partnership (SAP) Canada cordially invites you to a session on

Report Back from
The People's Health Assembly,
Savar, Bangladesh

And

What Canadians can do?

On: Friday, February 9, 2001
From 12 to 3 PM
At: Room 202, 1 Nicholas Street, Ottawa

The People's Health Assembly (PHA), held from December 4 - 8th, 2000 in
Savar, Bangladesh, marked the beginning of a powerful global health
movement. Gonoshasthaya Kendra, the People's Health Centre, was host to some
1,500 health activists from around the world, who came together to learn
from each other, to share their songs and stories, and to address the root
causes of the world's most pressing health problems and disparities. The
conference was unique in that it gave voice to people and nations that are
continually marginalized in mainstream international fora. From the more
than 90 countries represented, most participants came from grassroots
organizations in Asia, Africa and the Americas, with limited representation
from the industrialized world, including about five Canadians.

The PHA was founded on the belief that "together we can build a better
world, and that organized grassroots action can bring about positive social
change." Because action for change needs to be grounded in a sound
assessment of current realities, the Assembly focused on exploring the
immediate, underlying and basic causes of ill health and how these relate to
the interconnected crises of our times. Perhaps the most impressive outcome
of the PHA was the broad consensus that was generated through this shared
analysis, which culminated in the drafting and signing of a People's Charter
for Health. The Charter will be used as a tool for people everywhere to
develop their own solutions and to hold accountable local authorities,
national governments, international organizations and corporations.

Two of the Canadian participants to the PHA:

Donna Chiarelli
(Who attended the PHA with Women's Health Interaction and Inter Pares
support)

Christine Harmston
Burma Relief Centre (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Will report back at this session.

An open discussion to outline what Canadians can do to pursue the "People's
Health Agenda" further will follow.

A light lunch will be served. Please RSVP by Thursday, February 8th, 2001
