[OPIRG-EVENTS] prayer vigil for Burnt Church lobster dispute - Ash Wed., Feb 28, 12 noon.

                                STOP THE FISHERIES VIOLENCE

At noon on Ash Wednesday, February 28, members of Christian Peacemaker
Teams (CPT) will gather at the headquarters of
the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, 200 Kent St., Ottawa, to
pray for an end to Canada’s violence against
Mi’kmaq lobster fishers. They will be accompanied by Lennie the Lobster.

CPT Canada Coordinator Doug Pritchard said, “In keeping with Ash
Wednesday, we will bring an offering of ashes from a
sacred fire at Esgenoôpetitj (Burnt Church, New Brunswick). These ashes
will be a reminder of the abuse of human rights
perpetrated by federal fisheries officials last year. We will pray for a
peaceful lobster fishery in the coming season which is
rapidly approaching.”

Christian Peacemaker Teams is an initiative of Mennonites, Brethren,
Quakers and other Christians which supports
violence-reduction teams around the world. They maintained a team at
Esgenoôpetitj from April to October, 2000.

Those interested in joining the CPT team can meet at First Baptist
Church (cr Elgin and Laurier) around 10:30A for briefing, leaving at
11:30A sharp to walk to DFO (cr Kent and Laurier). More information,

All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons
and daughters of the Earth. Humans do not weave the web of life, they
are merely strands in it. Whatever they do to the web they do to
themselves.
