[OPIRG-EVENTS] Reminder: Teach-in on the FTAA starts Friday!
Ottawa “Teach-in”/Awareness Building on the Free Trade
Area of the Americas (FTAA)!!!
March 16th, 17th, 18th, 2001 – Free!

Brought to you by Ottawa Communities in Action (Ottawa
CIA)
This local event aims to raise awareness and create
discussion amongst Ottawa and area residents on the
Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) agreement and
its potential to gravely affect our health and social
services, education system, postal services, food
security, water supply, labour rights, and the
environment. Women, indigenous peoples, South and
Central American Communities, people of colour, and
North American Communities will all be affected.
Though the FTAA aims to honour democratic processes,
governments and big businesses have created the treaty
with virtually no public input and the public is not
even allowed to see the text of the agreement as it is
being drafted. This agreement affects many different
countries and communities and this event will act as a
tool to inform communities in Ottawa.
Friday March 16th 7:30 - Communities Rising Up
Ottawa Public Library (Metcalfe and Laurier)
A panel of speakers discussing the effects of the FTAA
on various communities and how they are rising up to
counter such trade agreements. Included in this
opening panel is a woman who is currently on a tour to
raise awareness about the effects of "Plan Colombia" on
Colombia's indigenous people and how they are
struggling to oppose it. Following the panel, there
will be a screening of the one hour film "Zapatista",
from the makers of the WTO Seattle documentary, "This
is What Democracy Looks Like"

Saturday March 17th - Education for Action 10 a.m.
Bronson Centre (211 Bronson Ave.)
Highly varied and original panels and workshops on the
FTAA, including both its likely effects and the growing
resistance to it.

7:00p.m. – 7:45p.m. Panel on Local and Global Actions –
what is going in Ottawa and around the world, including
a report on the upcoming “Release the Text” activities
happening in Ottawa on April 1st and 2nd.
8:00p.m. – 10:00p.m. Reports from Quebec –
representatives from the several organizing groups for
the anti-FTAA protests in Quebec City will tell of
their plans of action.
Sunday March 18th 10:00 a.m. - A full day of non-
violent direct action training.
This day of training is meant to be a general
introductory overview of non-violent direct action
(going directly to sources of power which are not
responsive to affect their functioning and demand
change) techniques and strategies. It is not specific
training for any upcoming actions, though the
techniques and strategies can certainly be used. The
training is open to anyone with an interest and
participation is in no way equal to commitment to
upcoming actions

Everyone is welcome to be a part of this awareness-
building event and please feel free to come to all or
parts or it.
The Saturday/Sunday events at the Bronson Centre are
wheelchair accessible, while (with apologies) the
Friday night events at the Ottawa Public Library are
not.
Lunch and supper on Saturday and lunch on Sunday will
be provided (while quantities last!) and lunch will be
provided on Sunday. All meals are vegan (no meat,
dairy, or eggs) and local merchants have provided some
of the food. Please bring your own bowl and mug if you
can!
Basic translation will be provided as needed in Spanish
on Friday night and in French on Saturday.
