We are pleased to announce a Roundtable discussion on the topic of
Problems and Prospects of Local Governance in India

Dr. George Mathew
Founding Director of the New Delhi-based Institute of Social

Room A-1 500, Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade
Dr. George Mathew, Founding Director of the New Delhi-based Institute of
Social Sciences, is one of India's premier experts on the Panchayati Raj
system of local governance. Dr Mathew has participated and presented
papers in international conferences on religion and society, political
process and democracy, and human rights. His studies and articles on state
and society appear in national dailies, journals and books. He is also a
member of committees and task forces constituted by the Government of
India and the Planning Commission.
Dr. Mathew's major works include Communal Road to a Secular Kerala and
Panchayati Raj From Legislation to Movement. Dr. Mathew has also edited
the following works: (i) Shift in Indian Politics; (ii) Dignity for All:
Essays in Socialism and Democracy; (iii) Panchayati Raj in Karnataka
Today: Its National Dimensions; (iv) Panchayati Raj in Jammu and Kashmir;
(v) Status of Panchayati Raj in States of India 1994; and (vi) Status of
Panchayati Raj in the States and Union Territories of India 2000.
As a specialist in a wide range of issues related to decentralization and
gender equity, Dr. Mathew offers many insights into the evolutionary and
revolutionary forces at work in Indian society. We hope that you will be
