PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY IN OTTAWA -- THIS IS A SERIOUS CALL TO ACTION
I am writing to ask you to do what might be the easiest and most
entertaining form of effective social activism you'll ever do.
Next Wednesday, August 1 is the day that Ottawa's smoking ban comes into
effect. As has occurred in other cities with similar restrictions, there
WILL be a backlash from some restaurant and bar owners, who will try to
strike the law down, or at least water it down significantly. In fact,
they have a day in court on August 27 to try to do just that.
Now Wednesdays in Ottawa are not exactly big evenings for watering holes,
which is why we should all go out for a drink that night. Let the first
day that the smoking by-law comes into effect become known as the night
that bars were packed with people who revelled in the fact that the places
where they go to have fun with friends are healthier for both workers and
patrons, and no one has to come home reeking of smoke.
Without such a show of support for the by-law, opponents will likely be
successful in at least watering it down (no pun intended), as they have in
Toronto and other cities.
Anyone arguing against the law will have a hard time saying the law is
unpopular if people came out in hordes the first night it came into effect.
So make a statement. Stop by for a pint, and bring a friend!
