Background:
Burma (renamed Myanmar) is ruled by one of the world=s most brutal
military regimes according to Amnesty International. In 1988, students in
Burma led a non-violent uprising, which culminated on August 8, 1988 with
a nation-wide strike. Thousands of non-violent protestors - including
workers, mothers, and monks calling for an end to military rule were
gunned down in cold blood by military forces.
