[OPIRG-EVENTS] Thurs., October 25th - International accompaniment in Guatemala

The Guatemala Solidarity Committee of Ottawa (GUASCO) requests your
presence
for an information session on international accompaniment in Guatemala
with
Natalie Tran and Sophie Houle, who just returned from living in
Guatemalan
communities for a three months period.
Witnesses from about 20 communities, which have survived massacres at
the
beginning of the 1980s, have brought denunciations in front of the
Guatemalan justice against the high command of the Lucas Garcia and Rios
Montt regimes. Some of these communities have asked for a permanent
international presence, some others, to be visited every other week.
Guasco is now looking for indivuduals interested in spending some time
in
Guatemala, to dedicate a few months to international observation. In the
actual context, this presence is highly valued and a clear need for more
accompaniers is felt.
The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 25th at room 306 Dunton
Tower
on Carleton University’s campus.

Le Comité de Solidarité avec le Guatemala d’Ottawa (GUASCO) vous invite
à
une session d’information sur l’accompagnement international au
Guatemala,
avec Natalie Tran et Sophie Houle, deux accompagnatrices de retour
depuis
peu. Elles ont vécu dans des communautés guatémaltèques pendant environ
trois mois.
Des témoins d’environ 20 communautés, ayant survécu aux massacres commis
au
début des années 1980, ont effectué deux dénonciations légales contre
les
officiers formant les haut-commandements des régimes de Lucas Garcia et
de
Rios Montt. Plusieurs communautés ont manifesté leur désir d’avoir des
accompagnateurs internationaux en permanence, d’autres préfèrent
recevoir la
visite de ceux-ci une ou deux fois par mois.
Guasco recherche maintenant des individus intéressés à passer quelques
mois
au Guatemala pour y faire de l’observation internationale. Dans le
contexte
actuel, la présence d’observateurs est hautement appréciée et un manque
d’accompagnateurs se fait clairement sentir.
La rencontre aura lieu le jeudi 25 octobre à 19h au local 306 Dunton
Tower
de l’Université Carleton.
