Through their research, the Theberges' have discovered that much of the
Algonquin wolf population is migratory, with the wolves following deer out
of the Park sanctuary each winter. Their findings highlight a conservation
issue; they have found that, in some years, as much as half of the wolf
population was killed by humans through hunting and trapping. Today, the
Park population is in decline and under siege by invading coyote/wolf
hybrids.

Professor John Theberge has conducted field research for more than 30 years
in the Yukon, Labrador and British Columbia. He was a student of wolf
researcher Doug Pimlott, who was in turn a student of noted conservationist
Aldo Leopold. The Theberges are considered the pre-eminent experts on the
Algonquin wolves' ecology and are advisors to Earthroots' Wolves Ontario!
Project. They were awarded the Equinox Citation for Environmental
Achievement in 1994 and have written numerous scientific and popular
articles and four books, including Wolf Country, a classic on wolf research.
John Theberge is an adjunct professor at the University of Waterloo and the
Canadian representative of the World Conservation Union's wolf specialist
group.
