Winner of the 2001 John Humphrey Freedom Award

                     Cross Canada Tour
Sponsored by Rights & Democracy, Montreal (www.ichrdd.ca)

Dr. Sima Samar has been selected as this year's John
Humphrey Freedom Award recipient for her courageous efforts
towards strengthening the human rights of women and girls in
Afghanistan and in refugee camps in Pakistan. (See web sites:
www.ichrdd.ca and/or www.w4wafghan.ca for further details).

The Office of Gender and Equity Issues of the Faculty of Medicine, the
Federation of Medical Women of Canada and the Institute of Women's Studies
of the University of Ottawa are proud to be co-hosting this speaking event
on:

Wednesday December 12 at 7:30 p.m.
Auditorium, Marion Hall, 140 Louis Pasteur
University of Ottawa main campus

Dr. Samar will receive her award on Dec. 10 in Montreal, and is traveling
across Canada to speak about her work. She will be our guest on that evening.

This is a timely opportunity to hear about the courageous feminist work of
Dr. Samar on the front lines of Afghanistan, where she has given hope to
individual women, girls, men and boys. Her clinics and schools are certainly
a model for the world on how to take a positive approach against all odds.
