THIS YEAR RESOLVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT HOMELESSNESS:

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY WITH HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION EARLY INTERVENTION
PROJECT

There are over 250 households in the City of Ottawa who’s landlords apply to
eviction them each month at the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal. Around 125
of these households are ordered evicted without ever going to a hearing or
contacting the community resources that can help them keep their housing.
With Ottawa having the lowest vacancy rate in Canada it is critically
important to support people to keep their housing to reduce homelessness.

The Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation(CERA) runs an innovative
homelessness prevention project where tenants who have been served with an
eviction application are contacted and informed of their rights and the
options to challenge the eviction. To dispute the eviction tenants have only
five days to respond in writing to the Tribunal. Tenants are also referred
to appropriate community agencies if they need a number of specific
services.

We also collect information from tenants in order to get a clearer
understanding of evictions in Ottawa-Carleton.

Volunteers are needed to make some of these initial contacts with people
facing eviction by phone on Thursday evenings. Volunteers are asked to
commit to one Thursday a month and to attend the training session.
Volunteers play a crucial role in the success of the program. Volunteers
will be provided with training, resource materials and supervision while
phoning.

The training will take place on Wednesday, January 16th from 6PM to 8PM.

We particularly welcome people who have experience living on a low-income
and people who have faced eviction or homelessness. Fluency in languages
other than English would be an asset, particularly French.

Please call Sherrie Tingley at 789-2228 for more information. You can also
respond by e-mail to: stingley@equalityrights.org

We also require volunteers at other times to assist with data entry,
envelope stuffing and general office tasks.
