JOB OPPORTUNITY (two positions):
Senior Account Manager, IMPACS COMMUNICATIONS CENTRE
The Institute for Media, Policy and Civil Society (IMPACS) is seeking two
new staff members to provide strategic counsel and communication services to
our growing roster of not-for-profit clients. One position will be based in
our Vancouver head office, a second position will based in Toronto or
Ottawa.
IMPACS is a national charitable organization, headquartered in Vancouver,
with branch offices in Toronto and Stratford. Our focus is on strengthening
civil society, particularly through communications. Our Communications
Centre offers a range of communications training and professional services
to not-for-profit social change and environmental organizations and
coalitions across Canada.
Term: Full-time (3 month probationary period) 35 hours/week
Salary: $40k to $50k per year, plus benefits
Location: (1) Vancouver; (1) Toronto or Ottawa
Start Date: March 1, 2001, or as negotiated
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has a minimum of 3-5 years of media and
communications experience, ideally with a focus on strategic communications
planning, mainstream media campaigning and issue advertising.
S/he will have proven experience working with not-for-profit social
justice and environmental organizations at a local, regional and national
level.
The candidate will possess outstanding written and verbal
communication skills, excellent organizational and management skills and
meticulous attention to detail.
The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to multi-task and
oversee and implement multiple fast-paced projects at one time while
consistently meeting deadlines.
The candidate will possess strong leaderships skills, be a
“self-starter,” a creative problem solver, have outstanding collaborative
skills and be able to work with a minimum amount of supervision.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Senior Account Manager works with and reports to the Director of IMPACS
Communication Centre. S/he will:
Strategic Communications Planning
Work with IMPACS colleagues to coordinate communications planning
projects with client groups, including message development, opinion
research, issue advertising and other communication projects
Issue Advertising
Coordinate various aspects of issue advertising with clients, staff,
advisors and subcontractors
Coordinate strategic planning and the drafting of creative briefs,
copy-writing and media buying
Media Relations
Develop strategic media plans and tailored media contact lists for
clients
Draft media advisories, news releases, media backgrounders and short
articles on client issues
Pitch stories to mainstream and news media outlets across Canada
Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with assignment editors
and reporters in print and broadcast media as well as new media,
particularly in Ontario
Account Management
Coordinate the work of various subcontractors, volunteers and
advisors as necessary on specific projects or with specific clients; this
includes obtaining quotes, drafting contracts and tracking budgets
Coordinate media buying during advertising campaigns, working with
IMPACS staff, clients, advisors and subcontractors
Track project budgets, maintain detailed timesheets and prepare
client invoices
Write brief final reports of communications work for clients,
according to the IMPACS style guide
Fundraising
Assist with research for fundraising opportunities for the
Communications Centre
Assist in developing fundraising proposals for the Communications
Centre
Other
Help coordinate communications research projects for IMPACS,
including opinion polls, focus group testing and media surveys
Assist with building IMPACS media database
Maintain a standard 60% billable time after a start-up period
Ability to attract 5-10 new clients in the first year
