[OPIRG-EVENTS] water issues
WHO: David Schindler, Professor of Ecology, University of Alberta
Jamie Linton, environmental author
Maude Barlow, National Chairperson, Council of Canadians
WHAT: Around the world, fresh water is quickly becoming big business, and
the preserve of the wealthy. As a global water shortage looms, there is
enormous pressure on Canada to export our water. But are water exports the
solution, or the problem?
The Council of Canadians is holding a Newsmaker Breakfast to get at the
answer to this question.
Dr. Schindler will present results from his personal research on the
ecological impacts of bulk water exports.
Jamie Linton will outline the findings of his new paper "Ecological Effects
of Water Exports".
Ms. Barlow will talk about how big business is making the problem all the
more severe.
The event is in celebration of World Water Day, March 22.
WHEN: Monday, March 18, 2002, 8 am. Hot breakfast included. $7 NPC members,
$20 non-members.
WHERE: National Press Club Dining Room, 150 Wellington Street, Ottawa,
Ontario.
Ms Barlow and Tony Clarke have just published "Blue Gold: The Battle Against
Corporate Theft of the World's Water". Copies of the book will be available
to media by request.
