For a presentation and discussion on

Human Rights of marginal communities: The "lower caste" dalits of India

By Arpita Anant, Currently Commonwealth Visiting Research Scholar at Queen's
University, Kingston, from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Anyone with an interest in the rights of marginal communities would benefit
from an understanding of India's complex and socially divisive caste system.
This lecture will touch upon caste in a historical perspective, talk about
the Indian government's "reservation policies" to empower dalits, mass
mobilization by the dalits and their rise to political power, within the
context of the continued violation of their rights in India today.

When: Wednesday, April 10, 2002, 12noon -2 pm. Please bring your lunch
along!
