[OPIRG-EVENTS] Invitation to the Launch of the South Asia Human Development Report

Dear Friend,
South Asia Partnership Canada is pleased to host the Canadian launch on the
South Asia Human Development Report 2001, the Westin Hotel, (Ontario Room)
Ottawa on Monday April 15, 2002, 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. The theme of this
year's report is Globalisation and Human Development.

Since September 11, the governments and peoples of the world have come to
appreciate that, not only has globalisation made the world a more
inter-connected place than ever before, but also that process has proved to
have its detriments as well as its benefits. This year's Human Development
in South Asia report comes at a time when South Asia's poorest neighbor,
Afghanistan, faces renewed warfare and the fallout of decades of poverty and
the proliferation of weapons - the negative face of the globalised world.
Nor is the sad example of Afghanistan a rarity in South Asia, the report
shows.

The report, issued annually by the Mahbub ul Haq Human Development Centre,
says that about half a billion people in South Asia have experienced a
decline in their incomes during the recent era of globalisation. By
contrast, only a small minority of the educated urban population received
any of the benefits of the region's economic growth.

Dr. Khadija Haq, the Centre's Director will be with us to present this
report. We would like to invite you to this launh. Please see the program
below. We admit that this is a late notice for the event, but your presence
will definitely add value to this event. I would appreciate if you can make
time to be with us for this important launch.
We are looking for your confirmation at the earliest. Please RSVP with Wendy
Scoots at Phone: 241 1333 Extension 221, or e-mail sap@sapcanada.org.
Yours sincerely,

Richard Harmston
Executive Director
