The Colours of Africa festival presents a selection of recent feature
films from several regions of Africa.  
Some of the film directors and producers will be present to introduce
their films and engage in a dialogue with audiences.

Le festival Couleurs d'Afrique présente une sélection de longs métrages
récents en provenance de plusieurs régions de l'Afrique.  Certains des
réalisateurs et producteurs seront sur place pour présenter leur film et
pour s'entretenir avec l'auditoire.

Tickets / Billets
$8.50, or $5.50 for seniors and children under 16  /  8.50$ ou 5.50$

Tickets and festival passes ($20) will be available at the door / Les

Saturday, April 20, 7 pm      100 Days
Nick Hughes, Rwanda/United Kingdom, 2001, 96 mins
In English, with French sub-titles.  Not suitable for children
This drama revolves around a love story between a young Rwandan couple,
Josette and Baptiste, caught up in the genocide in Rwanda over three
months in 1994. The film depicts how a local Hutu official is persuaded
to implement the Government's policy of genocide against the Tutsi
population, with resulting tragedy. 100 Days is an accomplished and very
moving portrayal of a community living though one of the 20th Century's
worst tragedies.  Producer Eric Kabera will present 100 Days at the
festival.

Sunday, April 21, 7 pm        Karmen Geï
Joseph Gaï Ramaka, France/Senegal/Canada, 2001, 86 mins
In Wolof and French, with English sub-titles. Not suitable for children.
The film opens in the prison yard on the island of Gorée, near Dakar,
Senegal.  With drums beating and in front of prison guards, Karmen leads
her fellow inmates in a spectacular and sensual dance, into which she
seduces the prison director, Angélique.  Karmen then escapes the
penitentiary and returns to life in the city, to a smuggling ring and to
her eventual tragic end.  Bizet's opera score has been replaced by
Senegalese music and choreography.  It's an explosion of rhythms, dance
and sensuality.

Jour de grâce
Mamadou Tintin Sene, Senegal, 2000, 26 mins
In Wolof, with French sub-titles
Ablaye N'Diaye, 12 years old, lives with his psychologically unstable
mother, whilst his father is in prison.  His grandmother's love for him
and his adventures in the company of some animals compensate for the
lack of affection.

Le Bûcheron de Zietrou
Vincent Glès, Côte d'Ivoire/Canada, 2001, 11 mins
Animated film, French dialogue
This is the story of Gouèh, a philosopher monkey which lives in the
forest of Zietrou.  He watches powerlessly as the forest is destroyed by
Sekou, a greedy and ambitious woodcutter.  Fortunately, there is
Oulambah, a man who speaks to the trees and protects the forest...

Almodou
Amadou Thior, Senegal, 2000, 85 mins
In Wolof, with French sub-titles.
Almodou has been entrusted by his poor farmer parents to a marabout in
Dakar for his religious education. As a "talibé", Almodou has to go
begging each day and bring home a lot of money to the marabout.   As a
way of escaping his fate, he returns to his village, but his father
brings him back to his master, where he is beaten.  In desperation,
Almodou flees.  It's the start of his life wandering the streets of
Dakar... Director Amadou Thior will present Almodou at the festival.

Saturday, April 27, 7 pm      Frontières
Mostéfa Djadjam, France/Morocco, 2000, 105 mins
In French and Arabic, with French sub-titles.  
Frontières describes a drama that thousands of Africans live daily,
namely their attempts to emigrate to Europe. They flee poverty in West
Africa and throw themselves into a clandestine and often perilous
adventure that leads them to the gates of Europe.  They travel in groups
across Senegal, Mauritania, Algeria and Morocco, but mutual support
gives way to solitude in front of the ultimate obstacle.  Director
Mostéfa Djadjam will present Frontières at the festival.


Sunday, April 28, 7 pm      La saison des hommes
Moufida Tlatli, Tunisia/France, 2000, 122 mins
In Arabic, with French sub-titles
Like many men in Tunisia, Saïd works in Tunis for most of the year,
returning home for a month, a 'season', to be with his wife, children
and mother.  Aïcha, his wife, finds life unbearable on the island of
Djerba, particularly under the authority of Saïd's mother.  With the
birth of a son, the family moves to Tunis, where Aïcha weaves the
carpets that Saïd sells.  The son turns out to be autistic and, faced
with her husband's intolerance, Aïcha eventually decides to return to
Djerba.  Ratiba Hadj-Moussa (York University) will present La Saison des
Hommes at the festival.
COULEURS D'AFRIQUE 2002

Samedi 20 avril,  19h      100 Days
Nick Hughes, Rwanda/Royaume-Uni, 2001, 96 mins
en anglais, sous-titres français.  Ne convient pas aux enfants.
Ce drame se construit autour d'une histoire d'amour, celle d'un jeune
couple rwandais, Josette et Baptiste, piègé par le génocide au Rwanda
pendant trois mois en 1994.  Le film montre comment un fonctionnaire
hutu a été convaincu de  mettre en oeuvre la politique de génocide du
gouvernement contre la population tutsi, qui mène à la tragédie. 100
Days dresse un portrait très réussi et passionné d'une communauté qui
vit une des pires tragédies du 20 ième siècle. Le Producteur, Eric
Kabera, présentera 100 Days au festival.

Dimanche 21 avril,  19h      Karmen Geï
Joseph Gaï Ramaka, France/Sénégal/Canada, 2001, 86 mins 
en wolof et en français, sous-titres anglais.  Ne convient pas aux
enfants.
Le film s'ouvre sur une image de la cour de prison sur l'île de Gorée,
près de Dakar, Sénégal.  Au son des tambours et devant les gardiens de
prison, Karmen entraîne ses co-détenues dans une danse spectaculaire et
sensuelle, au cours de laquelle elle séduit la directrice de la prison,
Angélique.  Karmen s'échappe ensuite de la prison et retourne à la vie
en ville, à une bande de contrebandiers et à sa fin tragique.  La
musique d'opéra de Bizet est remplacée par une musique et une
chorégraphie sénégalaises.  C'est une explosion de rythme, de danse et
de sensualité.

Jour de grâce

alors que son père est en prison.  L'amour de sa grand-mère et les
escapades en compagnie des animaux compensent son manque d'affection.

Le Bûcheron de Zietrou

C'est l'histoire de Gouèh, un singe philosophe qui habite la forêt de
Zietrou.  Impuissant, il voit celle-ci détruite par le bûcheron Sekou,
un homme aux ambitions démesurées.  Heureusement, il y a Oulambah, un
homme qui parle aux arbres et qui protège la forêt...

Almodou

en wolof, sous-titres français.
Almodou a été confié par ses parents, des paysans pauvres, à un marabout
de Dakar pour poursuivre son éducation religieuse. En tant que "talibé",
Almodou doit mendier chaque jour des sommes importantes et les rapporter
au marabout.  Voulant échapper à son sort, il retourne au village mais
son père le raccompagne chez son maître où il est roué de coups. 
Désespéré, Almodou fugue.  Commence alors pour lui l'errance dans les
rues de Dakar... Le réalisateur Amadou Thior présentera Almodou au
festival.

Samedi 27 avril, 19h     Frontières

en français et en arabe, sous-titres français
Frontières décrit le drame quotidien que vivent des milliers
d'Africains, celui des tentatives d'émigration vers Europe.  On fuit la
pauvreté de l'Afrique de l'Ouest et on se lance dans une aventure
clandestine et parfois périlleuse qui mène aux portes de l'Europe.  Des
voyages en groupe à travers le Sénégal, la Mauritanie, l'Algérie et le
Maroc, où l'entraide fait place à la solitude devant l'ultime obstacle.
Le Réalisateur, Mostéfa Djadjam, présentera Frontières au festival.

Dimanche 28 avril, 19h      La saison des hommes

en arabe, sous-titres français
Comme beaucoup d'hommes en Tunisie, Saïd travaille à Tunis presque toute
l'année et ne rentre que pour un mois, une 'saison', chez sa femme, ses
enfants et sa mère.  Aïcha, sa femme, trouve insupportable la vie sur
l'île de Djerba, surtout sous l'autorité de la mère de Saïd.  Avec la
naissance d'un garçon, la famille déménage à Tunis, où Aïcha tisse les
tapis que vend Saïd.  Ils découvrent que le fils est autistique et,
devant l'intolérance de son mari, Aïcha décide de rentrer à Djerba. 
Ratiba Hadj-Moussa (Université de York) présentera La Saison des Hommes
au festival
