Since their inception in the 1930s, Gandhian advocacy methods have variously
inspired and informed social movements the world over. Ekta Parishad, a mass
organization based in North India, has effectively mobilized for land rights
in India over the last 15 years, using politically potent processes like
satyagraha, padyatra and so on. Last year, Ekta Parishad's efforts went
international with the setting up of Ekta Europe. At this presentation, you
will learn about the effectiveness of Gandhian civil disobedience methods,
the tangible gains made by marginalized rural and tribal populations in
North India, including women, and how the international solidarity front,
Ekta Europe, came to be. This meeting is a call to action to support Ekta
Parishad's forthcoming campaign - the Orissa Padyatra - scheduled for later
this year. We will also explore the possibilities of setting up an Ekta
Canada.

SAP Canada's India Linkage Program has been publicizing Ekta Parishad's
advocacy efforts, in Canada, along with the Church of St. John the
Evangelist, Ottawa.
