Hello good people, 

This message is to tell you about a bold idea that was hatched here in the
region. A group of us have started the process of organizing  an
Ottawa-Outaouais Social Forum (OOSF). While having that description, our
conception is slightly different than the model of previous social fora.
Accordingly, the title "Ottawa-Outaouais Social Forum: A Community Carnival
for Change" is fitting. 

Our group started as a subset of Ottawa New Politics Initiative, but we now
feel it important to keep the OOSF separate from our NPI aspirations. That
being said, some of the values and goals of the two look similar. 

If you would like to see this project happen, then we're asking that you
come to a general planning meeting on Monday, 20 January 2003 at the Sandy
Hill Community Health Centre (221 Nelson St., corner of Rideau). Wheelchair
accessible. To all moms and dads, there will be childcare offered in an
adjacent room to the meeting so this can be a play date, too. If you expect
to bring kids, rsvp with Angela: 997-1059/230-0684.

The work of bringing all the wonderful, bright, inspiring ideas and
personalities together will begin then. Any amount of time and energy you
could offer would be cherished. If you could host a workshop or activity,
even better! 

What follows is a call-out document, including contacts, to all interested
people and groups in Ottawa, Gatineau and nearby areas.  This could be a fun
way to improve our city.

OTTAWA-OUTAOUAIS SOCIAL FORUM

A Community Carnival for Change 


                   
Inspired by the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre and similar events
occurring throughout Europe and Canada, Ottawa and Outaouais residents and
organizations are invited to participate in our own Social Forum for May 2nd
to 4th, 2003.

The Ottawa-Outaouais Social Forum will bring together progressive people and
groups to share and explore creative ways to engage in social justice
issues, promote sustainability, strengthen our community and work to improve
quality of life for ourselves, others and future generations.

The Social Forum is not a conference.  It will be a dynamic meeting of
social movements: a great opportunity for dialogue, discussion, debate,
creative action and mobilization, for building networks in the region, and
for promoting campaigns and initiatives.  In a carnival atmosphere, the
Social Forum will offer a diverse range of activities to:

- build political and economic literacy;  
- energize, engage and inspire each other;  
- create participatory democracy in and outside of electoral politics;  
- learn about alternatives to corporate capitalism;  
- learn about concerns facing different social movement and activist -
groups and initiatives they have taken toward change;  
- make connections and strengthen links among  a diversity of community
members;  
- promote peace and justice; 
- have fun!  

 
The emphasis will be on working for change at the local and regional level.
Issues might include:

Participatory budgeting / Privatization of public services / Community
economic development / Environmental issues / Immigration and refugee issues
/ Transportation / Cooperative projects / Radical parenting / Diversity /
Organic and community gardening / Fighting poverty / Social housing,
eviction and homelessness / Aboriginal issues / Media literacy / Alternative
media / Political parties / changing our electoral system / Health care /
Education / Arts / Determinants of health / Social services / Access to
enough healthy food / Organizing unions / Community-based solutions &
alternatives / Connecting the dots between local and global issues / Sexism
/ Racism / Social justice issues / Homophobia / Disability issues and
more....

Anyone can propose and organize a Social Forum event.  Activities might
include:

Puppet-making & using / Popular theatre / Anti-Oppression training / Audio &
Visual Projects / Radical Cheerleading / Debates / Performance Art /
Storytelling / Skills-building workshops / Community kitchens / Radical
Reading / Information-sharing / Political Action / Interactive games and
popular education / Cultural events / Clowning / Music / Workshops and
discussions / Events for children or youth / and all those we haven't
thought of!

We hope that the Ottawa-Outaouais Social Forum will provide something of
interest to people of all ages, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and social
groups.  We also hope to have simultaneous translation provided for many of
the largest sessions, along with smaller sessions that will function as
bilingually as possible.  Help make this convergence of progressive people
in the region will reflect the rich diversity of our communities.

On voudrait vous informer au sujet d'une idée hardie qui a germé dans la
région.

Quelques-unEs d'entre nous ont entamé la possibilité d'organiser un 
Forum Social Ottawa-Outaouais (FSOO), dont la conception est 
"Carnavalesque."  Notre petit groupe a débuté comme sous-comité de la
section d'Ottawa de la Nouvelle Initiative Politique (NIP), mais nous
pensons maintenant que ce forum est trop important pour être confiné aux
seules aspirations de la NIP.  Mais de toute façon les valeurs et les buts
de la NIP et du FSOO sont semblables.

Si vous voulez que ce projet prenne de l'élan, nous vous demandons de bien
vouloir assister à une réunion de planification qui se tiendra Lundi, le 20
janvier 2003 au Centre de Santé Communautaire Sandy Hill (221, rue Nelson,
coin Rideau). Portes ouvertes à 6h30, et la réunion commencera à 7h.
L'endroit est accessible aux handicappéEs en chaise roulante. Si vous pensez
amener des enfants, on offrira un service de garderie dans un espace annexe
=E0 la réunion; veuillez avertir Angela: 997-1059/230-0684.

Le travail nécessaire pour regrouper toutes les idées et personnes 
merveilleuses et brillantes qui pourrait surgir commencerait à ce 
moment.  Nous apprécions d'avance tout le temps et l'énergie que vous
partageriez avec nous. Si vous voulez organiser un atelier ou une activité,
c'est encore mieux!

Le texte qui suit contient une explication du Forum, ainsi que les 
personnes-contact. On invite toutes les personnes et tous les groupes
d'Ottawa, de Gatineau et des régions avoisiantes à participer à ce projet.
Ce serait une façon enrichissante et plaisante d'améliorer notre région.

FORUM SOCIAL OTTAWA-OUTAOUAIS

Un Carnaval Communautaire pour apporter des Changements!

Inspiré par le Forum Social Mondial de Porto Alegre et par d'autres

Canada.  Des citoyenNEs et organisations d'Ottawa et de l'Outaouais

Le Forum Social Ottawa-Outaouais sera un point de rencontre pour les

pour améliorer la qualité de la vie pous nous-mêmes, pour les autres 
et les générations futures.

Le Forum Social n'est pas une conférence. Ce sera une réunion 
dynamique de mouvements sociaux: une grande occasion de tenir des 
dialogues, des discussions, des débats, des actions créatrice et de 
la mobilisation; le moyen de construire des réseaux dans notre 
région, et de promouvoir des campagnes et des initiatives. Dans une 
atmosphère de carnaval, le Forum Social offrira toute une panoplie 
d'activités afin de:

- construire un savoir politique et économique;
- nous engager et nous donner de nouvelles énergies les uns les autres;
- créer une démocracie à laquelle participe les gens, en dedans et en dehors
de la politique électorale;
- en apprendre plus au sujet d'alternatives au capitalisme corporatif;
- reconnaître quels sont les problèmes auxquels divers mouvement 
sociaux et groupes activistes font face, et apprendre par quelles 
initiatives ils ont soulevé leurs défis;
- créer des contacts et renforcer les liens entre une diversité de 
membres de nos communautés;
- promouvoir la paix et la justice;
- s'amuser!

L'emphase sera de travailler pour le changement aux niveaux locaux et
régionaux. Les thèmes pourraient comprendre:

Préparation de budget par les gens et pour les gens / Privatisation 
des services publics / Développement économique communautaire / 
Sujets environnementaux / Immigration et réfugiés / Transport / 
Projets coopératifs / Diversité / Jardins biologiques, communautaires /
Combattre la pauvreté / Habitation sociale, eviction et sans-abri / Lecture
attentive des médias / Médias alternatifs / Partis politiques / Changement
du système électoral / Système de santé / Éducation / Arts / Déterminants de
la Santé / Services sociaux / Accès à des aliments nutritifs / Organisation
de syndicats / Solutions et alternatives dirigées par la communauté / Faire
le pont entre les problèmes locaux et mondiaux / Sexisme / Racisme /
Homophobie / Thèmes relatifs aux Autochtones ou aux Handicappés / Sujets
touchant à la justice sociale / et autres .....

N'importe qui peut proposer et organiser une activités lors du Forum 
Social. Celles-ci pourraient inclure:

Fabrication de marionnette / Utilisation de marionnettes et de 
théâtre populaire / Enseignement anti-oppression / Projets 
audio-visuels / Débats / Art de performance / Raconter des histoires 
/ Ateliers pratiques / Cuisines communautaires / Lecture radicale / 
Partage de connaissances / Action politique / Jeux interactifs pour 
eduquer le monde / Évènements culturels / Faire le clown / Musique / 
Ateliers et discussions / Activités pour enfants et jeunes / et 
encore ...

 Nous espérons que le Forum Social Ottawa-Outaouais mettra une 
activitée intéressante à la disposition de chacunE, quelque soit 
vôtre âge, groupe social, ethnique ou culturel.  We espérons 
également avoir une interprétation simultanée pour les plus grosses 
session, et voulons nous assurer que les sessions plus petites 
fonctionnent de façon plus ou moins bilingue.  Aidez-nous à faire en 
sorte que cette convergence de personnes progressives reflète la 
riche diversité de nos communautés.
