Sustainable Homes Primer

Tuesday March 25, 2003
What makes a home sustainable? Come and explore how a house can be a
self-sufficient, healthy, ecologically responsible,
integrated and holistic building. This lecture focuses on the important
aspects of understanding the concepts before a house is
planned or renovated. An in depth slide show demonstrates existing
homes that have integrated various sustainable systems such as natural
building materials (straw bale, cob, wattle and daub, wood, stack wall,
conventional, etc.), energy self-sufficiency (wind, passive solar,
photovoltaic systems), water catchment, alternative black water and grey
water systems (filtration ponds, living machines, indoor planter boxes,
etc.). Please note that for in-depth ecological and healthy materials

All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons
and daughters of the Earth.
We do not weave the web of life, we are merely strands in it. Whatever
we do to the web we do
to ourselves. Chief Seattle, 1854 (Adapted).
