Peacework under attack:
How do we respond to violence directed at peaceworkers
in Palestine?

Panel Discussion with ISM-Montreal speaker, Lucho van
Isschot (Peace
Brigades International), Anita Block (Women in Black),
Jooneed Khan (La
Presse, TBC), and Yavar Hameed (International Human
Rights lawyer).

This panel discussion will focus on recent violence
directed at three
internationals working with the International
Solidarity Movement (ISM) 
in
Palestine. Panelists will address the targeting of
peaceworkers and
journalists in Palestine, legal issues around the
attacks, how to 
respond,
implications for the non-violent struggle in
Palestine, and the impact 
on
non-violent peace team work elsewhere.

In recent weeks one international peace activist in
the occupied 
territories
of Palestine was killed and two others maimed.  All
were working with 
the
International Solidarity Movement (ISM). ISM uses
nonviolent, direct 
action
to confront and challenge the illegal occupation 
(www.palsolidarity.org):

· Rachel Corrie, 23 - Killed while trying to protect a
Palestinian 
doctor's
home from demolition, she was run over twice by an
Israeli bulldozer.
· Brian Avery, 23 - Shot in the face by a tank-mounted
Israeli machine 
gun
while standing still with both hands raised.
· Tom Hurndall, 22 - In a coma after being shot once
in the head from 
an
Israeli watchtower. He was escorting three small
children to safety.

All three peaceworkers were easily indentifiable and
wearing 
fluorescent
vests at the time of their death/wounding.

À l'ordre du jour: les attaques sanglantes du mois
dernier qui ont
ciblé trois individus oeuvrant avec le Mouvement
international de
solidarité (ISM) en Palestine ainsi que les questions
qui découlent
de la violence dirigée vers ces artisan-ne-s de la
paix et les
journalistes en Palestine, les conséquences légales de
ces actes
d'agression, les enjeux explicites pour la résistance
non-violente
en Palestine et les implications pour les groupes
solidaires de la
non-violence et pour la paix qui travaillent ailleurs.

Au cours du mois dernier, une artisane de la paix dans
les territoires
occupés de la Palestine a été tuée et deux autres
gravement blessés.
Tous oeuvraient avec le Mouvement international de
solidarité (ISM).
ISM soutient la résistance non-violente pour
confronter et défier
l'occupation illégale (www.palsolidarity.org).

· Rachel Corrie, 23 - tuée lorsqu'elle essayait de
protéger la maison
d'un docteur palestinien; un bulldozer israélien l'a
écrasé à deux
reprises.
· Brian Avery, 23 - tiré en pleine face par une
mitrailleuse
israélienne pendant qu'il se tenait debout, les deux
mains levées.
· Tom Hurndall, 22 - dans un coma après avoir été tiré
une fois dans
la tête alors qu'il accompagnait trois petits enfants
durant une
fusillade.

Ces trois portaient des gilets fluorescents fort
visibles au moment
où chacun a été agressé.
