[OPIRG-EVENTS] Sun Jun 8 10:30am First Canadian Rivers Day - Concert & Festivities

Sun Jun 8 10:30 First Canadian Rivers Day - by land or water!

You are invited to participate in the official launch of the first Canadian
Rivers Day! Join us by the Ottawa River just behind the Canadian Museum of
Civilization on Sunday, June 8th, 2003.

The event will start at 10:30 AM with a concert with river songs by musicians
Ian Tamblyn, René-Jean, Luce Bélanger, Derek Jones and Maxime Charron.

At 11:00 AM, the official ceremony begins with a First Nations' blessing for
all the rivers of Canada. Musicians will be joined by special guests and
dignitaries to celebrate and honour our rivers in word and song. Young artists
from BC will present their "Streams of Dreams".

The launch ceremony is followed by refreshments and conversations with
Riverkeepers, Canadian Heritage Rivers, cross-Canada paddlers and Rivers Day
organizers. Rain or shine, come and join us by land or water.

If you come by water:
Canoeists can launch their canoes from Victoria Island and enjoy a 10 minute
paddle past Parliament Hill to the museum to enjoy the concert and launch 'by
water'. Boaters can launch from various access points on the Ottawa River east
of Parliament Hill.

    If you come by land:
Walk or wheel to the Museum of Civilization! Come down to the rivers edge, just
behind the museum to enjoy the concert and launch by land.

While the official launch is here, events will be happening across Canada with
festivals, clean ups, proclamations, environment workshops, dedications,
boating safety workshops and canoe trips.

People along the Ottawa River can enjoy the various events hosted by Ottawa
Riverkeeper (go to www.ottawariverkeeper.ca for more information).

In Ottawa, visit Westboro Beach for historical and environmental tours, the
opening of the Legacy Kiosk u and more!
