South Asia Partnership (SAP) Canada cordially invites
you to a talk on

POLICE AND PRISON REFORMS IN INDIA

With

Dr. (Ms.) Doel Mukerjee, Commonwealth Human Rights
Initiative, New Delhi, India

To be followed by a discussion
Date: Wednesday, July 2, 2003
Time: 12-2 PM
Place: Room 202, 2nd Floor, 1 Nicholas Street, Ottawa

Dr Mukerjee works in the Police, Prisons & Human
Rights Programme at The Commonwealth Human Rights
Initiative (CHRI). She will speak about CHRI’s work
which focuses on the criminal justice system,
including prisons and the police, in order to ensure
human and women’s rights and create a culture of human
rights.

CHRI is a non-partisan, international non-governmental
organization, mandated to ensure the practical
realization of human rights in the countries of the
Commonwealth. It was born out of an awareness that
although the Commonwealth countries share legal
principles and values, much remains to be done to
establish human rights standards within the
Commonwealth and to promote a culture of human rights.
Over the last five years, CHRI has been working on
structural reforms in the police and prisons, right to
information bill, fact-finding missions and advocacy
training.

Dr Mukerjee has done academic and activist work on the
following: crimes against women, police and prison
reform, and the rights of women and children. In 1997,
as a Shastri Indo-Canadian Fellow for Doctoral Studies
in Canada, she was a Research Fellow at the Department
of Criminology, University of Toronto. She is
currently in Canada for a training course at the
Canadian Human Rights Foundation in Montréal.
