[OPIRG-EVENTS] Muslim Separatist Movement in the Philippines - Sun. July 20, 1-3 p.m.

“Insecurity in the South: Recent Reincarnations of the
Muslim Separatist Movement in the Philippines”

With Dr. Josie Hernandez de Leon, B.A., M.P.A.
(University of the Philippines), Ph.D. (Queen's)
             Department of Political Science,
Laurentian University
             Website:
<http://www.laurentian.ca/polisci/faculty/jdeleon/index_jdeleon_e.asp>

A brief historical account of Muslim separatism in the
Philippines, specifically about the two main
separatist groups (i.e., the MNLF and the MILF, as
well as other groups such as Abu Sayyaf, the Pentagon
Gang and other so-called KFR (Kidnap-for-Ransom)
groups.

Treating Muslim separatism as either a military or a
criminal problem alone will not solve the problem of
insecurity in the Muslim South. The religious element
of their struggle, no matter how tenuous it may be,
must be recognized and handled carefully. As well, no
real peace will occur in Mindanao if atrocities
committed by Philippine authorities are not addressed
and dealt with swiftly and decisively.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of Communists and other subversives. We intend to clean them out, even if it means rounding up every bird watcher in the country.
