That's not the right question to ask now.  The right question to ask
is,

   Will the Internet user community really be best served by two
   parallel PKI protocol development efforts?

I think that there is a large community who are going with X.509 by
default but would prefer something else, and another community with
something to contribute who are avoiding X.509 completely because it
is tied so closely with X.500.
