I've yet to be convinced that the features of ASN.1 are really needed
for this particular application. A fairly small number of data types
are being handled, and efficient encoding isn't particularly
important. I therefore don't see what the advantage of ASN.1 is over
ad hoc binary or ASCII encodings.
