Keyed hash functions, Novell's patent

Ref: Your note of Sun, 29 Jan 95 11:40:20 EST

Folks:

I hope that the issue with Novell's patent can be resolved...
Indeed, I presented my paper at the 92 Infocom (May) in Florence.
Moreover, a rougher version of the very same "paper" is included in
the appendix of my PhD thesis which was approved/recorded in April
1991 at the University of Southern California. This is almost a full year
earlier than Infocom. (It includes both key-prefix and key-suffix
methods.)

To the best of my knowledge the idea of using key as a prefix was also
(independently) suggested by Steve Kent and Dave Solo who
were (back in 90/91) involved with SNMP security features.
I recall having an email discussion with them about this subject in the
Fall of 90.

I also remember seeing a paper by Li Gong where he proposed something
quite similar.

Cheers,
Gene
