I know, that I am in the wrong area, but I would be grateful if anybody can
recommend good references 
for layer 2 and layer 3 tunneling ?

My understanding is the following:

PPTP and L2F are Layer 3 tunneling protocols. They directly encapsulate IPX,
IP etc.
 
L2TP is a Layer 2 tunneling protocol. It encapsulates PPP, which can
encapsulate IPX, IP etc.
