-- HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MEETS WITH PEHUENCHE.
>The Chamber of Deputies Human Rights Commission will meet
>Wednesday with the eight Pehuenche families who oppose the
>construction of Endesa's Ralco dam and refuse to sign land barter
>contracts with the company. If Ralco is constructed, it will mean
>flooding 600 hectares of Pehuenche land and relocating 91
>Pehuenche families. Eighty-three families have already signed
>barter contracts with Endesa.
> Commission head Sergio Ojeda said this meeting is a follow-
>up to a visit the deputies made to the Upper Bio Bio three weeks
>ago. The spokesperson for the families, Antolin Curriao, said they
>will take the opportunity to present several legal and ecological
>arguments upon which they base their rejection of the proposed
>dam.
> The 83 families in favor of the dam, however, said the
>construction should continue, and that they too hope for a meeting
>with the deputies to express their point of view. The opposing
>opinions within the Pehuenche community became clear last week
>when the eight opposing families tried to find a space to hold a
>traditional Nguillatun ceremony in rejection of the dam, and the
>other families would not make one available to them. The
>ceremony did go forward.
