Open court for 11 deaths in 3G resettlement project
Authorities opened court in Badong county People's
Court of Hubei Province for the collapse of Jiao Jia
Bay Bridge that is a part of Three Gorges resettlement
project. The inquiry was carried out in 28-29 May,
and news related to this was censored. The incident
caused 11 deaths, and four criminals have been
heavily sentenced. Another case which is related
to "shoddy" resettlement projects is now under investigation.
At 11:40 a.m., Feb 20 1998, 209
National Road (Badong Section) of Jiao Jia Bay Bridge,
a part of Three Gorges resettlement project, the
48-metre long stone bridge, which was to be completed,
collapsed. Over 20 people were seriously injured.
Following the incident, authorities censored media reports
pertaining to this incident, and reported to higher-ranking officials
that only 3 people died. The law enforcement agency
then carried out and investigation, and confirmed that 9 people
died immediately and two others died after being sent to the
hospital. Meanwhile, 6 people were seriously injured, and seven
people sustained minor injuries. The bridge cost RMB798,000
and financial losses and damages totalled of RMB1.1 million.
The Badong People's Court sentenced the person-in-charge
Tan Ming-zi for 9 years, Chen Zhai-heng for 7 years,
Tan Wen-guo for 5 years and Zho Fa-chun for 5 years.
According to the law enforcement agency and experts,
the cause of the collapes was the low quality of wooden
support framework and the wrong procedure in construction.
