SUPPORT VILLAGERS ARRESTED FOR FIGHTING KALABAGH DAM IN PAKISTAN!!
Join Protest in Washington, DC on August 14 or Send Messages of Solidarity!

On July 27, more than 100 people were arrested and two dozen injured as
police tried to disrupt a scheduled rally against the proposed Kalabagh Dam
in Pakistan. Police shut down roads leading to the rally, forcing
protesters to scramble for a new demonstration site. Police then ordered
the demonstrators to disperse and attacked the protesters with batons and
tear gas.

One of the leaders, Rasool Bux Palijo, denounced the police actions as
barbarism and violations of human rights, and said such tyrannies could not
compel the people of Sindh province to give up their protest campaign
because Kalabagh Dam is a matter of life and death for them.

The $4.9 billion Kalabagh Dam threatens to displace 124,000 people and
cause severe environmental impacts on the Indus basin in Sindh Province.
The project has received financial support from the World Bank, Asian
Development Bank, and the Italian and Japanese governments. US supporters
have set up a web page on the struggle (www.saveindus.org) and are
organizing a rally on August 14 in Washington, DC.

We urge you to take action to support people fighting against the Kalabagh
Dam in Pakistan. Join the rally in Washington, DC on August 14 (see below)
or send a message of solidarity to ayazl@paknet3.ptc.pk and
wsihq@worldsindhi.org.

Thanks for your support!

Some facts on Kalabagh Dam

- Was rejected by the elected parliaments of three out of four affected
provinces of Pakistan.
- Violates the water distribution accord between Sindh and Punjab provinces.
- Will displace 124,000 people living in Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP
provinces.
- Will stop sediment transport vital to the health of the Indus delta.
Currently, the delta receives only 6 percent of the silt that it has
historically received due to dams and diversions. The delta has shrunk from
350 square kilometers to about 25 square kilometers.
- Will submerge at least 35,000 acres of land.
- Threatens the survival of the already endangered Indus dolphin, Palla
fish and Sea cat and will destroy mangrove forest.
