170,000 acres of forest land to be hived off

By MBURU MWANGI

More than 170,000 acres of public forest has finally been hived off
for private use.

Furious opposition greeted the Government's announcement last
February that it intended to part with the land.

The then Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Francis
Nyenze, gave a 28-day notice to excise the land but faced petitions
opposing the move, with several cases going to court.

The land is in 13 forests and totals nearly 70,000 heactares (170,000 acres).

Its fate is sealed in the latest Kenya Gazette Supplement, dated
October 19 but released only on Thursday.

The authority to alter the forest boundaries was signed by the
current environment minister, Mr Noah Katana Ngala, on October 8.

The forests to be cut up are: Mt Kenya; Kapsaret and Naboki in Uasin
Gishu; Eastern Mau, Mt Londiani and Molo in Nakuru; South Nandi and
Northern Tinderet in Nandi; South Eastern and Western Mau, surrounded
by Kericho, Bomet and Nakuru; Marmanet in Laikipia; and Nakuru and
Western Mau in Kericho.

From the Mau forests alone, the Government has hived off nearly
60,000 hectares (150,000 acres).

These have been delineated as follows: 35,301 ha (88,252) from
Eastern Mau Forest; 24,109 ha (60,272 acres) from South Eastern and
Western Mau; and 324 ha (810 acres) from Western Mau Forest.

Nearly 5,000 acres of Mt Kenya Forest is to be taken from three
fronts as follows: 717 ha (1,793 acres) adjoining the south-western
boundary of the Nyeri township; 912 ha (2280 acres) adjoining the
south-western boundary 15 kilometres north-east of Nyeri; and 196 ha
(490 acres) within and adjoining the south-western boundary of the
forest 15 kilometres east of Kiganjo. Marmanet Forest will lose
2,837.4 ha (7,092 acres) at the northern boundary of Nyahururu Town
while Kapsaret Forest will be reduced by 1,194 ha (2,985 acres) eight
kilometres south-west of Eldoret.

Nabkoi Forest will have 37.89 ha (95 acres) taken away and South
Nandi will have 11 ha (27 acres) hived off 10 kilometres south of
Kapsabet Town.

Mt Londiani will lose 125 ha (312 acres) only two kilometres north of
Molo Town while Molo Forest will be reduced by 901 ha (2,253 acres)
and Northern Tinderet Forest will be minus 788 ha (1,970 acres) eight
kilometres from Elburgon Town.

Nakuru Forest will give away 271 ha (675 acres).
