November 24, 1997:
> *********************************
>
> ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
>
> STOP THE CUTS!!!!
>
> RALLY TO PROTECT HIGHER EDUCATION
>
> 2pm Monday
> Meet in Quad in front of Dunton Tower
> WEAR BLACK
> to protest the DEATH of our programs!
>
> OUR REQUEST:
> WE ARE CALLING ON SENATE MEMBERS TO STAND UP AND SAY NO TO ADMINISTRATION'S
> UNDEMOCRATIC PROCESS!
> WE ARE ASKING SENATE TO DELAY THE VOTE UNTIL THEY HAVE THE FACTS STRAIGHT
> AND UNTIL PROPER EVALUATIONS ARE DONE ON THE LONG-TERM IMPACTS OF THESE
> CUTS FOR THE FUTURE OF CARLETON UNIVERSITY.
>
> SOME FACTS:
> Administration has thrown DEMOCRACY out the window in their decision-making
> process regarding these cuts:
> - Programs to be cut WERE NOT CONSULTED until the decision
> was made!
> - No thorough long-term impact or cost-benefit analysis has been
> undertaken regarding any of the specific programs targeted.
> - Administration has used CLOSED-ROOM meetings and SECRETIVE
> measures to bring these cuts through.
> - Administration has refused to provide departments with their
> JUSTIFICATION for these cuts.
> - Administration has purposely kept the university community
> MISINFORMED about the process.
>
> Not only all this:
>
> ADMINISTRATION HAS SHOWN A BLATANT DISINTEREST AND DISRESPECT FOR THE
> ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT.
>
> THE PROPOSALS HAVE BEEN TIMED SO THAT THEY DAMAGE IF NOT DESTROY THE
> ACADEMIC FUTURE OF THE STUDENTS IN THESE PROGRAMS:
>
> Information about the cuts came out only through confidential memos being
> leaked!
>
> WHEN WERE THEY GOING TO TELL US?
>
> Administration has timed this so that not only have they destroyed any
> chance for students in these programs to benefit from funding applications
> already made - and too late to change - for programs that are going to be
> defunct! (If the administration gets their way.) Students have to find new
> academic homes in the middle of an academic year, too late in many cases.
>
> BA, MA, and Ph.D. students have lost weeks of work at a crucial time of
> year because of the timing of this process!!!
>
> WHAT IS THE ADMINISTRATION THINKING?????
> WE MUST DEMAND ANSWERS!!!!
>
> Come out on at Monday 2pm to protest Administration's unfair & uninformed
> decision to cut the programs in Comparative Literary Studies, Classics,
> German, Russian, Spanish, Italian and others!
>
> Protest the federal and provincial governments' cuts to
> post-secondary education! We are sending a message out not only to our own
> President Van Loon, but to Mike Harris and Mr. Chretien!
