Peace in Afghanistan conference
South Asia Partnership Canada invites you to a
Consultation on the Importance of Peacebuilding in Afghanistan
On: February 26-27, 1999
At: Parliament Hill, Ottawa
Afghanistan has endured one of the most prolonged periods of conflict
in modern history. Torn apart by armed conflict since 1978 and today
faced by new challenges in the form of Taliban rule, Afghanistan must
overcome many hurdles before moving towards sustainable peace and
human development. This two days consultation will allow Canadian
NGOs, government officials, and individuals concerned with the future
peace building in Afghanistan to gather and discuss the key issues
affecting the country. By promoting awareness and open dialogue
between all stakeholders, it will provide appropriate policy
recommendations for the government and NGOs involved in the
peacebuilding process in Afghanistan.
Topics of Discussion:
* Historical context of conflict * Canadian policy
perspectives * Canadian and other international efforts in
peacebuilding * Local initiatives in peacebuilding *
Strategies and mechanisms for Canadian support * Policy
recommendations *
Resource People:
The consultation will feature the contributions of four special guest
speakers from Afghanistan, as well as many other from NGOs and
government.
Participants:
SAP Canada encourages representatives from NGOs, government, donor
agencies, community organizations, social activists, media, policy
researchers, academics, students and individuals concerned with
peacebuilding in Afghanistan to participate.
Registration:
* $50 - Organization (NGO or Government) * $30 - SAP Member
Agency or Southern NGO * $25 - Individual * $10 - Low-Income
or Full-time Student *
NOTE: Registration fees include: Two Lunches, Coffee, and a Reception
