* WORLD CAR-FREE DAY (first ever), Thurs Sept 21, world-
wide. A future without cars is a tantalyzing prospect. A *day*
without cars is a glimpse of that future. Imagine: People walking,
people smiling, a man selling ice-cream. (Hold on a sec, we're
having a '70s Chicago flashback. There, it passed.) Certainly, there
will be a measure of silence, a measure of peace. Conversations
will be heard. Desk jockeys will get a little exercise. People will
miss appointments they didn't really need to make. After
experiencing a city without cars - or, more realistically, part of a
neighbourhood without cars - many folks will find it hard to allow
the traffic back the next day. This is World Car-Free Day's
inaugural year. Let's kick it off with feeling. Download a poster at
http://www.adbusters.org , organize a rally or make a personal
statement on foot, bike or bus. It matters. Send your pics and
stories to campaigns@adbusters.org

* BIOTECHNOLOGY & THE GLOBAL ECONOMY, Fri-Sat Sept
22-23, Cambridge, Massachusetts. International Conference on
Biotechnology in the Global Economy: Science & the
Precautionary Principle". The safe use of modern agricultural
biotechnology has become one of the most contentious debates
worldwide. In 1992, the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development (UNCED) adopted Principle 15
which states that where "there are threats of serious or irreversible
damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a
reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent
environmental degradation." A version of this principle was
recently incorporated into the Biosafety Protocol to the Convention
on Biological Diversity. There is considerable controversy on the
meaning, scope, context and application of the precautionary
principle in international trade and environmental management.

A recent study of people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease has
shown that those who had been exposed to home pesticides were

"Genetic Engineering crops are not about ending world hunger --
they are about putting control of our seed-stock into the hands of a
few multinational corporations." - from a postcard to the Minister

"All larger organisms, including ourselves, are living testimonies
to the fact that destructive practices do not work in the long run. In
the end, the aggressors always destroy themselves, making way for
others who know how to cooperate and get along. Life is much less
a competitive struggle for survival than a triumph of cooperation
and creativity." - Fritjof Capra, "The Web Of Life"
