*HISTORY — Stephen Tucker and his wife Lucy (Cheney) came from Barton,
Vermont, to Papineauville, Quebec in the mid-1800s. Stephen, believed to

be the first person baptized in the Ottawa River, was a Christian
business man. He moved his family to Clarence ON where he manufactured
bricks, engaged in the square timber trade and ran a store. He built
Tucker House in 1871of local materials for son Stephen Jr. The senior
Tuckers were very active in the extension of the Baptist church in the
Ottawa Valley. In 1963 Margaret and Gladys Tucker sold the house and
property for a token amount to the Baptists of Ontario, hoping that it
would be used as a retreat and conference centre and continue as .a
memorial to their great-grandparents. It is now maintained and operated
by the Tucker House Commission as a Christian conference, retreat and
learning centre for spiritual, physical and ecological renewal.

**DIRECTIONS — Tucker House is 26 km east of Ottawa and 1.5 km east of
Rockland. From Ottawa follow the Queensway east past St. Laurent Blvd.

Keep left on Hwy 174 (former #17) being careful NOT to veer right on
#417 to Montreal. Continue on #174 past Orleans, Cumberland and
Rockland to the traffic light at the village of Clarence (MacEwen
service station near the corner). Turn right toward Clarence Creek on
Landry Road. Go about ½ km and turn right on Tucker Road. Go about ½ km

and turn right into Tucker House lane. If you get lost, try calling
Tucker House (446-5516) or Erik Fredeen, the Tucker House custodian
(446-0125).

All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons
and daughters of the Earth. Humans do not weave the web of life, they
are merely strands in it. Whatever they do to the web they do to
themselves.
- Chief Seattle, 1854 (Adapted).
