A new Burma support group is being formed, called the Ottawa Burma
Roundtable. The group's mandate is to bring about local participation in
the international Burma pro-democracy movement, and provide a forum for
constructive information-sharing on this subject. It will also provide the
opportunity to interact with other roundtable groups across Canada.

Comprised of a coalition of various groups and individuals, the group will
operate in a non-hierarchical manner and on a consensus basis. A core group
of volunteers will be responsible for the main organizational needs of the
Roundtable. The group will organize events and partake in campaigns that
will raise awareness of Burma issues with ordinary Canadians, local and
national media, as well as all levels of the Canadian government.

**February 12 is Union Day in Burma**. On this date in 1947 the Panglong accord
was signed between the Burmese and some of the other ethnic nationalities.
However, not all of the ethnic groups, signed the agreement.

The Ottawa Burma Roundtable's first event will be on February 13 in
commemoration of Union Day. Several people will speak on the history of
Union Day, the military's current propaganda of this day contrasted by Aung
San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy's perspective.

We hope this event will inspire attendees to join our regular
monthly meetings which we will be scheduling for the same time and day
every month (to be announced).
