wed. june 14: radioactivists meeting

caution - radioactive: turkey, syria, cyprus, lebanon, italy, greece,
egypt, jordan, israel, palestine, armenia, saudi arabia ...

atomic energy of canada limited (aecl) is proposing to export candu
nuclear reactors to turkey - one of the most seismically active areas of
the world. over 18,000 people died after last year's earthquakes in
northern turkey - and in the past few days, there have been more quakes
north of ankara, the country's capital. what would happen if an earthquake
struck a nuclear plant? atmospheric modelling has shown that the fallout
could be dispersed throughout the mediterranean region - and thousands
could develop cancer.

if you would like to help stop this from happening, please consider
joining the radioactivists, an anti-nuclear group that's part of
opirg-carleton. we advocate ecological and peaceful alternatives to
nuclear power, such as wind and solar energy.

"when you mention the atomic bomb, they are scared that it kills people.
it has not been used since the second world war. having such a bomb in
turkey's hand is security. it provides deterrence."
- enis oksuz, turkish transport minister, march 9, 2000.
