[OPIRG-EVENTS] Boreal Expedition 2000 Celebrations

COME JOIN FOUR COMMITTED CANOEISTS ON THE LAST LEG OF A MOMENTOUS JOURNEY
ACROSS CANADA'S GREAT NORTHERN BOREAL FOREST TO PARLIAMENT HILL!

This spring, four paddlers set out from the heart of Canada's boreal forest
in northern Saskatchewan on a 4,500 kilometre paddle to Ottawa. They set
out to see firsthand what cannot be seen on a map or in a book - the vast
spruce and pine forests, the clear lakes, tumbling rivers and mossy creeks
that have made "the bush" such a prominent part of what it means to be
Canadian. Along the way they have been the eyes and ears of all Canadians
concerned about protecting our global legacy of wild places and wild species
- our boreal forests.

Did you know that Canada's Great Northern Boreal Forests represent a quarter
of the world's remaining relatively undisturbed "frontier" forests?
Stretching from coast to coast, this vast great northern land is our last
best hope to sustain large areas of wild, undisturbed forests in Canada.

MEET THE BOREAL PADDLERS AT MEC MEMBERS DAY
Mountain Equipment Coop, 366 Richmond Rd, Ottawa
Saturday Oct 21st, 11am to 3pm

This is your chance to meet and greet the Boreal 2000 Expedition paddlers
Sarah, Ben, Graham and Laura. They will be pulling up onto Westboro Beach
at 10am on Saturday morning, then portaging all their paddling gear and
boats up to MEC.

From their "wilderness camp" at MEC, they will be sharing stories and images
of their long journey, of adventures and misadventures, of special places
and people many of us have never seen or met, of creatures great and small
who make the Boreal their home.

And there will be opportunities to listen to "Grey Owl" recount tales of
Canada's legacy of precious wild places and to join in on Voyageur ballads
played by local singer songwriters.

"PADDLE AND PORTAGE TO PARLIAMENT"
Victoria Island to Parliament
Tuesday Oct 24th 11:30am to 1:00pm

Paddle with us from Victoria Island along the Ottawa River below Parliament
to the Rideau Canal and Portage to the "hill". We will be accompanied by
some of Canada's best known canoeists and greeted by invited politicians
upon our arrival.

Or simply bring your lunch and greet the flotilla of canoeists as they pull
into shore and walk with us up to the Parliament Hill.

All paddlers MUST pre-register so that we can make the necessary
arrangements.

WHY IS OUR BOREAL SPECIAL?

The boreal is a unique and ancient ecosystem shaped by the natural stresses
of winter, short summers and repeated natural fires. At its heart are the
spruces - black and white - that form dense and sheltering stands for many
species, in a very harsh northern environment. This place is home to
woodland caribou and wolves, tiny songbirds and delicate orchids, and much
more.

Despite being one of the largest forested areas remaining in the world,
Canada's boreal is under intense pressure from a variety of sources
including massive clearcut logging operations, mining activities, and oil
and gas developments.
There is an immediate and urgent need to establish protected areas in the
Boreal or risk losing this ecosystem forever.
